I Had a Bad Monday…

Yeah, nobody likes Mondays. The poor day is the butt of jokes, and all for the simple reason that it’s the first day after the weekend. What did Monday ever do to you? I guess I can’t really blame Monday for this, it just happened to have occurred on that day. No matter what day it was, this is not how I wanted to start my morning:

That this happened was bad enough, but you may have noticed my mirror laying there on the ground at the end – snapped it right off. I checked everything out after, and besides the mirror some of the paint was ground off the clutch lever and the shifter was obviously bent. No major damage though, and since I was close to home I just headed back there to give everything a little closer look. That’s when I noticed that I’d also bent the handlebars…

The worst part about all of this, then, is that I couldn’t ride without replacing the bars. I also removed the shifter to try to bend it back into shape and found out that I’d also bent the mounting bolts and the connecting rod so it was toast too. Fortunately it was an aftermarket shifter and I still have the original – not as nice as the one I just ruined, but easily put back on.

Since I was replacing things anyway I took the opportunity to get better mirrors, I ordered a set of Aprilia mirrors from the Tuono model which are a direct replacement for mine. And way, way better. For the handlebars I picked up a set of clubman bars. I opted to mount them in the up position, so they’re a bit lower than stock. They can also be reversed and mounted in a down position which makes them analogous to clip-ons in position, but that was a little too aggressive for my hooligan bike without a fairing or a windshield.

The original bars and mirrors. Not the greatest photo of them, here's another look at the stock setup (not my photo): http://blues.jpj.net/~jespo/jespo_cycles/1998_buell_s1/8.jpg
